Ecol Lett 18:834–843Īssmann T (1999) The ground beetle fauna of ancient and recent woodlands in the lowlands of north-west Germany (Coleoptera, Carabidae). Thus, in a conservation perspective, our study provides evidence that each forest harbours original species combinations, suggesting that each of them is irreplaceable, especially for ancient forests, which are functionally more original however, recent woodlands have a high potential to spontaneously recover typical forest fauna communities with very similar structural and functional profiles to those of ancient forests.Īllan E, Manning P, Alt F, Binkenstein J, Blaser S, Blüthgen N et al (2015) Land use intensification alters ecosystem multifunctionality via loss of biodiversity and changes to functional composition. The only difference was for functional originality, which quantifies the average functional uniqueness of species within an assemblage: spiders’ communities of the ancient forests was more functionally original than those of the recent woodlands. Yet, we found hardly any significant differences in functional β-diversity, community structure, or conservation importance between the two forest categories. ![]() According to broad-scale ecological site characteristics, species composition and-to a lesser extent-trait distribution substantially diverged between ancient and recent forest sites. We studied how temporal continuity can shape taxonomic and functional composition and structure of forest-ground spider communities at a regional scale. the duration of an uninterrupted forest state) for conservation of the forest fauna has been demonstrated for several taxa, but its influence on functional diversity and conservation importance of communities remains unclear. ![]() The importance of temporal forest continuity (i.e. William Collins Publishers Pty Ltd, Sydney.Secondary (or recent) woodlands, whose development is favoured by massive farmland abandonment, are increasingly seen as promising habitats that limit losses of biodiversity and ecosystem processes. Records of the Australian Museum, 47: 117-140. Notes On Australian Zodariidae (Araneae), I. A Revision of the Australian Spider genus Storena(Araneae, Zodariidae). Danger to humansįew bites by these spiders have been reported and when they have, symptoms have been minor, consisting of a red welt and localised hot feeling for a couple of hours. Despite the heavy appearance of their fangs, these spiders are reluctant to attack and timid when confronted. The males also have characteristic club-shaped palps and can look quite threatening when these are held aloft. Wandering males frequently enter houses at night, and their bright colours can cause alarm. The oval egg sacs have a papery texture, and hold about 50 eggs. In contrast, the females have rarely been observed far from the burrow. Male spotted ground spiders live a vagrant life hunting or searching for females they may be found in leaf litter, under logs or rocks, or even indoors wandering across the floor. ![]() Some species, like Habronestes bradleyi, are closely associated with ants. Some species build burrows in the ground or shallow depressions, and build a palisade (fort-like structure) of vertically arranged twigs or leaves around the entrance. Like many spiders, little is known about their biology. Spotted ground spiders don't build a snare, but hunt and ambush ground dwelling insects. They mingle with the ants in their nest in the early mornings, when the ants are sluggish, and carry off the weaker ants as prey. One species of Storena is an ant mimic, resembling the red meat ants, Iridomyrmex purpureus. The eyes are in two back-curved rows of four. A characteristic feature of Storena is that they have a pale brown, pitted circle of bare cuticle between the front spots. When present, an unpaired spot occurs just above the spinnerets. They have two to five pairs of white or coloured spots on the dorsal surface of the abdomen that can range from pale yellow to bright orange. Legs are orange to red or black and white. They are usually dark-coloured (reddish to black), and sparsely haired. ![]() Spotted ground spiders are from 6 mm to 20 mm long. The Spotted ground spiders Habronestes and Storena are two genera of spiders in the family Zodariidae.
